The Peer Support Mentoring Program for People Living with ABI connects an individual who is a "veteran" of a life experience involving Acquired Brain Injury (the "Mentor") with a "Partner" who is coping with a similar ABI-related situation and is in need of support from a knowledgeable friend
You have probably mentored someone before without even realizing it. Giving advice or supporting others you know through a situation you have been through is something we all do naturally. Your experience is an invaluable tool that can help others see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You have been there - you know how hard it can be, but you also have found strategies for coping and adjusting. This information could help those who have heard everything the professionals have said, but need to hear from someone who has actually lived through it.
The commitment can be as little as 1 hour a week over the phone (or possibly by e-mail). You will be trained before being matched with a partner. Partners will be matched based on similar experiences and/or age, location and personal interests. The Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation has agreed to develop and oversee the program evaluation for this program, as this is a pilot project for Ontario. This program is based on a proven Peer Mentoring Program out of the U.S.
At this point we are actively seeking out "partners" for the program. Individuals who are learning to cope with ABI and seek some emotional support or friendly advice from those with experiences are encouraged to enquire about the program. Partners will be matched based on similar experiences and /or age, location and personal interests.
A screening of all partners will take place to ensure the most beneficial match between two individuals. If you think you would like to be partnered up with an experienced and trained mentor, please contact us at the main office.
